The PT/INR test, also known as the Prothrombin Time test, is a blood test that measures how long it takes for your blood to clot. It assesses the extrinsic and common pathways of blood coagulation, specifically looking at the function of clotting factors like VII, II (prothrombin), V, X, and fibrinogen. The test results are often reported as both prothrombin time (PT) in seconds and as an International Normalized Ratio (INR), which standardizes results across different laboratories. Purpose of the PT/INR Test:
Monitor Anticoagulant Therapy:
The most common use is to monitor patients on warfarin (Coumadin), a blood-thinning medication, ensuring the blood doesn't clot too slowly or too quickly.
The test can help identify underlying causes of unexplained bleeding or excessive clotting.
Since the liver produces many clotting factors, the test can indicate liver problems.
Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting, and deficiency can be detected through this test.
It may be performed before surgery to ensure adequate clotting function.
