HBA1c TEST
What is the HbA1c Test?
The HbA1c test (Hemoglobin A1c or Glycated Hemoglobin test) is a blood test used to measure the average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past 2–3 months. It helps doctors diagnose diabetes, prediabetes, and monitor how well diabetes is being controlled.
Hemoglobin is a protein present in red blood cells (RBCs) that carries oxygen throughout the body. When glucose circulates in the blood, some of it attaches to hemoglobin. This process is called glycation. The HbA1c test measures the percentage of hemoglobin that has glucose attached to it.
Because red blood cells live for about 120 days, the HbA1c test reflects the average blood sugar level over the previous 8-12 weeks.
